Richard Smith Workshop: the Styles of Chet Atkins & Jerry Reed
The Chet and Jerry Workshop will consist of the following points:
Thumb/finger independence, aka "Travis picking": we want to make sure that we have this down, or at least know the steps that need to be taken in order to achieve this particular skill.
Counterpoint: we'll study a couple of tunes/examples of Jerry Reed tunes that use counterpoint as a theme. "Swingin '69" is a good example. This, like classical guitar, will take guitar players out of the safe CAGED system, and explore other fingerings.
Alternating harmonics: we'll learn how to practice this technique which can be used for a harp like effect.
Walking bass lines: we'll need to re-finger melodies in order to be able to play a bass line underneath.
In order to put these all to good use, we'll work on some all important ear training throughout the whole class. This is key to develoing every skill and knowing how to use them.
There is a minimum signup of 6 to all workshops; if the minimum is not reached by noon of the day before the show, your payment will be refunded. There will be a maximum of 16 per class.
